Support Bipartisan Efforts in Congress Condemning Genocide Against Rohingya Muslims (Senate Resolution 250 and House Resolution 528)
CAIR Action Alert: Tell Members of Congress to Support Bipartisan Efforts Condemning Genocide Against Rohingya Muslims
(WASHINGTON, D.C., 10/10/17/) -- The Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today urged all citizens to contact their members of Congress to ask them to support Senate Resolution 250 and House Resolution 528.
These bipartisan measures call for the restoration of citizenship for the Rohingya Muslims, protection of their economic and social well-being and their freedom of movement. The resolutions also ask Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner who was awarded for her resistance to injustice in Myanmar, to condemn the brutal military crackdowns and to allow the delivery of aid into the Rakhine State.
“Congress must demand that the Burmese government immediately end the genocide campaign targeting Rohingya Muslims and eliminate that nation’s 1982 Citizenship Act, which is a major source of the oppression faced by that minority community,” said CAIR National Government Affairs Department Coordinator Amineh Safi.

Last month U.S. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and John McCain (R-AZ), along with 16 other co-sponsors, introduced a resolution calling for the condemnation of violence against the Burmese Rohinya and for the Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi to act on her stated democratic and human rights ideals. A similar resolution was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Rep. Sander Levin (D-MI), in conjunction with five other members.
More than half a million Rohingya have fled over the border to Bangladesh since September, joining the 300,000 displaced Rohingya refugees who were already there. There is now a total of 800,000 refugees in Bangladesh, with an additional 100,000 expected in the following weeks.
UN aid agencies continue to be prevented from delivering humanitarian assistance, such as food, water and medicine, to the Rohingya. Places where aid and emergency supplies are located are constantly bombed by Myanmar security forces. The ethnic cleansing of Burmese Muslims will continue if the violence carried out by Burmese authorities is not stopped.
To uphold the United States’ position as a leading advocate for human rights, it is imperative that as many members of Congress support these resolutions and speak out as a united front against these atrocities.
