TN Victims of Abortion Monument at the State Capitol

In the waning hours of Tennessee's legislative session, a proposal to memorialize victims of abortion with a monument at the Tennessee Capitol is running into opposition from some pro-life legislators. As originally drafted, SB 2227 / HB 2381 by Senator Steve Southerland (R-Morristown) and Representative Jerry Sexton (R-Bean Station) directs the State Capitol Commission (SCC) to develop and implement a plan for the commissioning of a memorial in dedication to and in recognition of unborn children in this state, to be located on the capitol grounds. A subsequent amendment has weakened the proposal and leaves establishment of the pro-life memorial to the discretion of the unelected Capitol Commission.

As originally proposed, the Tennessee Monument to Unborn Children would be placed on the capitol grounds near existing monuments to victims of slavery and the holocaust. No tax dollars would be used to erect the memorial. However, weakening language in the senate version states, "The General Assembly urges the State Capitol Commission to consider placing a monument to be erected on the capitol campus as a reminder of the inhumane practice of abortion." This in contrast to original language which specifically directs the commission to develop and implement plans for the memorial at the capitol.

Please immediately contact members of the Senate State and Local Government Committee and urge their support for the original language and for the fitting monument to memorialize the more than 650,000 unborn Tennesseans who have been killed by abortion in our state since 1973.

"Establishing a Memorial for the Victims of Abortion would be key to starting the healing process for many, many men and women," said Myra Simons. "Just the recognition that they are valued will go a long way in helping these hurting men and women to know we understand what they have gone through and for them to know that there are people who do indeed care. And also to remember the babies whose lives are forever gone because of their mother’s one misguided decision on that one ill-fated day. Establishing this memorial is just the right thing to do."
