Oppose Trump’s Family Separation Policy

CAIR Calls on Muslim Voters to Contact Elected Representatives in Opposition to Trump’s Family Separation Policy

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 6/18/18) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today called on American Muslim voters -- and all other Americans concerned about family values -- to contact their elected representatives to voice opposition to the Trump administration’s recently-introduced policy to break apart families at the border and place children in detention.

Criticism of the policy has come from across the political spectrum and includes condemnation from members of Trump’s own political party and family.

In a statement, CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad said:

It is unconscionable to rip children from their parent’s arms in a cynical attempt to pressure lawmakers to fund the widely-rejected border wall or to intimidate those seeking a better life for their loved ones. Members of Congress should hear from the majority of Americans who oppose this un-American, inhumane and immoral policy of family separation and detention of children.

Awad also quoted from the poem on the Statue of Liberty: “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

IMMEDIATE ACTION REQUESTED: Contact Your elected Representatives on This Important Issue.

CAIR has reported an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president.

The Washington-based organization’s recently-released 2018 Civil Rights Report, “Targeted,” showed a 17 percent increase in bias-motivated incidents against American Muslims from 2016 to 2017, and a 15 percent increase in the number of anti-Muslim hate crimes in that same time period.
