Urge Congress to Speak Out Against Trump’s Declaration of a National Emergency
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today called on all members of Congress to speak out against President Trump’s declaration of a national emergency at the southern border in order to access billions of dollars in funding to build a border wall.
Friday morning, President Trump declared a national emergency, saying “we’re talking about an invasion of our country with drugs, with human traffickers, with all types of criminals and gangs.”
TAKE ACTION NOW!!!
In response to the emergency declaration, CAIR said:
“CAIR condemns President Trump’s declaration of emergency powers to construct a border wall that is primarily motivated by an anti-immigrant ideology designed to ‘make America white again.’ Such a declaration is an abuse of executive authority and will immediately be challenged by in the courts and in Congress.
“Refugee asylum seekers, unaccompanied children or undocumented immigrants seeking work or to reunite with their families do not constitute a ‘national emergency.’ There is no invasion, only the manufactured rhetoric of a racist President who failed to get what he wanted.”
CAIR applauded legislators that have already condemned this hate-filled abuse of presidential authority, including Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Rand Paul (R-KY).
Yesterday, Congress passed, and President Trump signed legislation preventing another government shutdown and authorizing $1.375 billion for border fencing. CAIR applauded the 128 Representatives and 16 Senators who voted against the spending bill, which also included an increase in funding for U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In December, representatives of the California chapter of CAIR, along with other local and national faith leaders, were arrested at the San Diego-Tijuana border in an act of peaceful civil disobedience in support of asylum-seekers and immigrants.

In November, CAIR condemned the now court blocked Trump administration rules that would have denied asylum to virtually any migrant arriving at the border and that are based on the same controversial legal justification used for Trump’s “Muslim Ban.”

CAIR has witnessed an unprecedented spike in bigotry targeting American Muslims, immigrants and members of other minority groups since the election of Donald Trump as president. CAIR has repeatedly expressed concern about Islamophobic, white supremacist and racist Trump administration policies and appointments.
CAIR is America's largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.
La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
