Protect Washington's historic transportation investments in bicycling, health, and safety

I write to express my grave concerns regarding the consequences of your implementation of a low-carbon fuel standard by executive order.

I applaud you and the strong bipartisan majority of state legislators for making historic investments in Safe Routes to Schools and better bikeways. These are important investments that will fund hundreds of necessary health and safety projects in communities and schools statewide.

It has been widely reported that you are considering a decision that will take away a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build bikeways and safer sidewalks for Washingtonians.

We cannot gamble these hard-fought critical investments on a future legislative strategy to get these investments back after they have been lost by triggering the “poison pill” provision via this executive order. The health and safety of our children, and all Washingtonians who bike and walk, is not something to gamble over.

Right now you have backed into a false choice between achieving your carbon emission reduction goals and biking and walking safety (a stated priority in your own Healthiest Next Generation Initiative). I support you working to explore other options to reduce the state’s carbon emissions, but not at the expense of sacrificing immediate investments in the health and safety for our children, better bikeways, and complete connections for biking and walking that, not coincidentally, also reduce our state’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Please make the right choice for our children.
