Trump’s ban on Muslims, shut down of borders criminalize our communities

As your constituent, I urge you to speak out against the Trump administration's executive orders on immigrants and refugees. The Trump administration is turning bigoted rhetoric that was the foundation of Trump’s presidential campaign into bigoted policy, less than a week into holding office. The ban on Muslims and shutdown of our borders are the first steps in a Trump-era agenda that criminalizes entire communities based on their nationality and origin. In this country, we do not ban, register, or deport people based on their background or identity. We are better than state-sanctioned bigotry. 

I ask you to use your voice and your resources as an elected official to publicly call out Trump's executive orders and stand up for those who are being unjustly targeted. Our country is a nation of diverse communities with people of all identities and backgrounds.  Through our constitution and our core American values of freedom and equality,  we promise to protect all people no matter their background or identity. 

What is the problem with Trump's executive orders, particularly the ban on Muslims and the shutdown of our borders? 

- The ban on Muslims will reinforce Trump's plans to create a federal surveillance program, specifically targeting Muslims. 
- Those affected by the ban may be forced to list their names in a registry, making them susceptible to monitoring by the government through this program. 
- Furthermore, those already in the U.S. with legitimate visas will become targets of heightened surveillance. 
- Turning away or mistreating refugees is profoundly un-American. 
-  A shutdown of our borders to immigrants and refugees limits the freedom of minority groups to exist, by limiting the people who we allow into our country based on their faith or nationality. 

This ban and shutdown of our borders places a presumption of wrongdoing on refugees and Muslim Americans, and those perceived to be, and will further entrench mass suspicion within the communities of this nation. 

We need true leadership at this time of crisis. I call on you, as my elected official, to speak out publicly in support of all Americans who should have the freedom to live without fear, intimidation, or threat to their safety. Our nation is stronger when we stand united against hate and united under our common values.

Tell your representatives in Congress to say no to Trump's ban on Muslims and the shutdown of our borders. We cannot criminalize entire communities.
