Sign the Petition: Tell YouTube to Improve Its Policies Against Child Exploitation and Graphic Content
We recognize that YouTube is the most popular video-sharing site in the world. We hope to encourage YouTube to improve the content on the website. Specifically, we urge it to further and actively address the sexual exploitation throughout the site. YouTube is filled with disturbing videos that are sexually themed, often targeting children through the use of sexualized children's characters, along with other sexually explicit content. YouTube depends largely on reactive moderating, which relies on users to flag and report offensive or sexually explicit content. This essentially means viewers have to watch the pornography in order to report it. YouTube, for financial reasons, prefers this method to active moderation, or policing it in real-time on a company level. Often, these viewers are children who may not understand that such content is intended for adults and will take it in as part of their education about the world around them. It can shape their sexual template from a very young age, whether or not they sought it out. If YouTube doesn’t want to prescreen all uploaded videos, it must take the current reporting system seriously. If there is one complaint about a video, it should go up for review and if it abuses any of the terms of use, whether or not those violations were reported, it should be removed automatically. As of now, a video could be reported multiple times to YouTube resulting in either inaction or the reviewers deem the content appropriate. These videos then remain on the website. We appreciate that YouTube is constantly making improvements. We request that YouTube devote sufficient resources to effectively police its site.
